Veronika Sable-Preston was not a person prone to going on vacation. She was driven to work hard and achieve. Her parents had to force her to take time off. So, she went to Corsica for two weeks before she would visit Symkaria. Since the island had 1000 kilometers of sandy shoreline, coves and bays, she could spend the time leisurely. Though she only managed about two days on the beaches before she felt she was being too idle.
So, she signed herself up to take on GR 20. It was known as Europe's toughest long distance trail. One of her more daring classmates from school had partnered up with her. They set out with the confidence of young women about to take on the world after high school. Most days they had to climb up at least 600 meters and then descend at least 600 meters again. Her ankles and knees felt and possibly looked like minced meat. It gave Nika blisters and blisters on her blisters. The sun and heat felt more than willing to kill her. She felt constantly hungry, tired and dirty. But she never complained. In fact, at the end of most nights in the refuges on the trail, she had a small smile of satisfaction.
